THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRITISH AND AMERICAN ENGLISH: A LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS
Abstract
This paper examines the linguistic differences between British English and American English from phonological, lexical, grammatical, and orthographic perspectives. Although both varieties originate from the same historical source, they have developed distinct features due to geographical separation, cultural influences, and social change. The study analyzes pronunciation patterns, vocabulary variations, spelling distinctions, and syntactic preferences. The findings show that while differences are noticeable, mutual intelligibility remains high. The paper also discusses the implications of these differences for English language teaching.
