INDIRECTNESS AS A MEANS OF EXPRESSING RESPECT IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK COMMUNICATION

Abstract

Abstract: Respect constitutes one of the most important sociopragmatic categories in human communication because it regulates interpersonal relations, social hierarchy, and communicative harmony. Among the various linguistic mechanisms employed to express respect, indirectness occupies a particularly significant position. Rather than conveying intentions through direct and explicit forms, speakers frequently employ indirect linguistic strategies to reduce imposition, protect the interlocutor’s social image, and demonstrate consideration. The present study investigates indirectness as a means of expressing respect in English and Uzbek communication from a comparative pragmatic perspective. The analysis demonstrates that both languages rely extensively on indirect communicative strategies in requests, apologies, invitations, refusals, suggestions, and expressions of disagreement. While English primarily realizes indirectness through modal verbs, hedging devices, and interrogative structures, Uzbek frequently employs honorific forms, conditional constructions, politeness formulas, and culturally embedded expressions. The findings indicate that indirectness functions not merely as a linguistic phenomenon but as a reflection of sociocultural values and communicative norms. The study contributes to pragmatics, sociolinguistics, intercultural communication, and comparative linguistics by revealing the central role of indirectness in the expression of respect.
