Listening competence is a fundamental component of foreign language learning, as it enables learners to perceive, understand, and interpret spoken messages. This article explores the role of listening skills in English language education and discusses the most common challenges faced by first-year students. Particular attention is given to pedagogical and practical strategies aimed at improving listening comprehension, including the use of authentic materials, listening strategies, and systematic classroom practice. The study is based on the analysis of relevant scholarly sources and emphasizes that listening is an active cognitive process rather than a passive activity. The findings indicate that consistent exposure to spoken English and the application of appropriate learning strategies contribute significantly to the development of listening competence among EFL learners.
