Abstract

Discourse markers are pivotal in spoken and written English, serving as linguistic tools that structure conversation, manage interaction, and express speakers’ attitudes. Their stylistic functions extend beyond mere connectors, influencing the naturalness, fluency, and interpretative clarity of discourse. This paper examines the intricate relationship between discourse markers and paralinguistic elements such as intonation, stress, pauses, facial expressions, and gestures, emphasizing that communication effectiveness arises from the combined impact of verbal and non-verbal cues, where stylistic variation is closely intertwined with speaker intention, context, and socio-cultural norms.
