DIFFERENT APPROACHES AND TOOLS FOR ASSESSING LEARNERS’ KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING

Assessment in foreign language teaching has gradually shifted from a narrow focus on testing knowledge to a broader understanding of learners’ abilities and progress. Today, it is not only used to measure what students know, but also to support how they learn. This article explores a range of approaches and tools used to assess learners’ knowledge and skills in foreign language classrooms. Drawing on current pedagogical perspectives, it examines both traditional and more innovative forms of assessment, including formative, summative, and performance-based methods, as well as digital tools. The analysis suggests that combining different assessment strategies allows teachers to better understand learners’ development and encourages more meaningful learning. The article also highlights the importance of feedback, learner involvement, and the thoughtful use of technology in modern assessment practices.
