This article explores the crucial role of phonetics in developing pronunciation skills among learners of English as a Second Language (ESL). It argues that effective pronunciation teaching cannot be achieved without a sound understanding of phonetic principles, which provide the scientific foundation for accurate speech production and perception. The study discusses how phonetic training enhances learners’ awareness of sound systems, stress patterns, rhythm, and intonation — key elements for intelligible communication. Practical techniques such as phonetic transcription, minimal pair drills, listening discrimination, and articulatory practice are also examined. The article concludes that integrating phonetics into ESL instruction not only improves pronunciation but also strengthens overall communicative competence and confidence in oral interaction.
