Abstract

The article examines the concept of the literary variant of the English language, its historical development, phonetic features, and its role in modern communication. The literary standard is viewed as a codified, socially accepted form of speech based on educated usage. Special attention is given to its phonetic characteristics and the importance of Received Pronunciation (RP) and General American (GA) as major literary norms.
