Qalqonsimon bez inson organizmining o’sish va rivojlanishiga asosiy tasir ko’rsatuvchi a’zodir. Hozirgi globallashuv davrida qalqonsimon bez faoliyatiga ta’sir ko‘rsatuvchi ekzogen kelib chiqishli kimyoviy moddalarning, ya’ni endokrin buzuvchi moddalar (Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, EDCs) ning organizmga, xususan, gormonal tizimga bo‘lgan salbiy ta’siri ilmiy asosda tahlil qilinadi. Ilmiy tadqiqotda eng ko‘p uchraydigan sanoat kimyoviy birikmalari — polixlorli bifenillar (PCB), polibromli difenil efirlar (PBDE), perxlorat, bisfenol-A, ftalatlar, pestitsidlar va perfluor birikmalarning qalqonsimon bez faoliyatiga ta’siri klinik, eksperimental va epidemiologik tadqiqotlar asosida tizimli ravishda yoritiladi. Shuningdek, ularning gormonal muvozanatdagi o‘zgarishlarga olib keluvchi toksikologik va molekulyar mexanizmlari tahlil qilinadi hamda sog‘liq uchun xavflilik darajasi baholanadi.
