Abstract

Abstract: This article explores the role of borrowed words and etymological
doublets  in  the  historical  development  of  the  English  language.  It  examines  how
contact  among  cultures  and  languages  has  shaped  English  vocabulary  through
borrowing, adaptation, and semantic change. Special attention is given to the formation
of etymological doublets – pairs of words derived from the same origin but entering
the  language  through  different  routes  or  periods,  resulting  in  distinct  forms  and
meanings.  By  analyzing  examples  from  Latin,  French,  Old  Norse,  and  Germanic
sources,  the  article  demonstrates  how  layers  of  linguistic  influence  coexist  within
English and contribute to its expressive richness. The study highlights the significance
of  etymology  in  understanding  linguistic  evolution,  cultural  interaction,  and  the
historical depth embedded in everyday vocabulary.
